About Ranikhet



Ranikhet is situated in the northern part of the state of Uttaranchal, in the northern region of India. It is situated in the Kumaon hills and is located on an altitude of 1829 m above sea level. Ranikhet is 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora. The weather in Ranikhet is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters are cold (November-February). It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September and experiences snowfall in winters. A cantonment town of immense charm, it was once the pet excursion ground of Padmini, queen of the Katyuri king, Sudhardev (1180AD). There is much to see in and around Ranikhet starting with Kalika temple known for its forest nursery and the shrine to goddess kali. The plateau of Upat has a 9-hole golf course ringed by tall pines. Tourists visit Chillianaula for its Shiva temple

It is 26 km from Ranikhet and overlooks the incomparable Himalayas. Scouting camps are often held here and Syahi Devi peak and temple is just 3 km away.

Flora In Ranikhet:
The area round Ranikhet is a horticultural belt and apple orchards are found located in the Ramgarh, Mukteshwar belt . Other fruits grown here include peach, pears, apricot, and strawberry. Lichi is also grown in many parts. A number of floriculture farms have also come up.

Walks & Treks:
Mall Road The most popular activity is walking up and down the Mall watching the activity and shopping. There are magnificent views of the snow clad Himalayas and some of the peaks that can be seen include the 7817 metre high Nanda Devi.

Chillianaula It is very famous for its Shiva temple

Sheetla Devi, It is 26 km from Ranikhet and overlooks the incomparable Himalayas. Scouting camps are often held here and Syahi Devi peak and temple is just 3 km away.

Chaubatia Garden- This garden is famous for its delicious apples through out India and abroad.

How to Reach Ranikhet:

The nearest railhead from Nainital is Kathgodam, 80 kms away. Kathgodam is a pleasant railway station with a quaint restaurant which looks as if it is frozen in time. Trains arrive at Kathgodam from Agra,Calcutta,Dehradoon, Delhi and Lucknow. By road, Nainital is approximately an 8 hour drive from Delhi at a distance of 340 kms.
